The very first week the domain
VietnamVets.com was registered on the internet...we were deluged with email.
Most was from folks who had
apparently simply typed "vietnamvets" into the address space of their
web browser.
The comments and questions in
these messages were many and varied. Some simply wanted to know who we were and
what we were all about. Others asked what "cause" we were going to
promote on this site.
The majority of emails by far,
however, were inquiries on how the writer could find someone who served in Nam.
The letters were from old buddies, lovers and acquaintances. By far the most
touching, however, were from people asking, "How can I find out something
about my father whom I never knew?"
Whatever your reason for
searching, we hope and pray this page will help YOU find who and what you are
looking for.
In the USA, everyone of us
leave a constant "paper trail" as we travel through life. When we're
born, are in school, in hospitals, get married, register to vote, get sued, buy
or sell property and when you die...
Incidentally, a voter
registration form is usually found in the office of The Registra of Voters in
the county court house. For what it's worth, this form is most times a source of
finding a person's Social Security number and/or unlisted telephone number!
Each of those things and
hundreds more leave a paper record which is usually available to the public.
Following this paper trail is by far the easiest way to find a person, or to
find out anything about them you want to know.
If you have a source of
information which we haven't listed on this page, please share it with your
fellow searchers. Just email us the info at Search

Please note: Click any of
the following links and they will open in a separate window on your browser. To
come back to The Vietnam Vets Home Base, you will need to close the new window(s)
by clicking on the "X" in the upper right hand corner of the new
window.
If a person died between 1937
and the present, it is very easy to get their Social Security number plus much
other information about them right here online.
Link to the Social
Security Master Death Index site. Information available is the deceased
person's name, date of birth, date of death, address at time of death, social
security number, and in what state the card was issued. When you know name or
number, you can get the other info.
The Veterans
Administration site will tell you how and where to request the military
records of any deceased person who has served in the U.S. Armed Forces.
Also, at the same site, living
vets can learn how to use the Freedom of Information Act to request their own
records.
The Switchboard
site will quickly find anyone in the USA with a listed telephone.
The WhoIs
Link to InterNIC will show you the name, phone number and email address
of anyone with an internet domain registered in their name. It will also tell
you the owner of any domain name used on the internet.
Both WhoWhere
Search Page and Yahoo
People Search will give you similar info on phone numbers and email
addresses, but we find much of their facts kind of "dated."
Several commercial search firms
advertise on the WhoWhere site offering to find anyone for a price. We know
nothing about them and therefore can not recommend any of them.
The BigBook
Directory Search is a national "Yellow Pages". Locate any
commercial business in the USA.
The next link is invaluable in
finding public records about the person for whom you're searching...whether
they're dead or alive.
Find out things like where to
write and how much money to send for copies of birth certificates, death
certificates, marriage licenses, wills, divorces, court records, etc. All those
and much more at: United
